Game Programming Club

Are you one of those people who looks at a computer game not only as a fun break from classes and homework, but also as a form of art? When performing some menial in-game task, does your mind ever wander to how the framerate is so high given the precision of the geometry and the detail of the shadow, lighting, and particle effects? Ever wondered how the AI is able to get the drop on you? (Or maybe why its so stupid you have to turn the monitor off to prevent brain damage?) If so, then maybe GPC is for you!

Here at Game Programming Club, we start from the ground up. No templates, just an empty solution. UCLA does not offer a game design track, so save for a couple of graphics classes we are the number one resource for students interested in entering game design.

In the past, we have worked in 2D, coding in C# and using the Microsoft XNA framework via Microsoft Game Studio 3.0. This year will be slightly different however, and we will be attempting to work in 3D using C++ and Microsoft DirectX 9.

The club has no membership fees and is open to anyone. It is recommended that you know how to program in some language already, even if its not C++, but this is not a requirement. Do not worry if you haven't used DirectX. Most of our members haven't and we will be tackling it together.

Game Programming Club meets every Tuesday from 6:00pm-8:00pm in Boelter Hall 3760. If you are interested in joining feel free to stop by or send an email to gameprogramming at seas.ucla.edu.
